An extremely rare aspiration fossil (fish eating another fish) featuring a large Diplomystus eating a priscacara. 
 
Aspiration fossils are amongst the least discovered types of fossils found in the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This particular plate features 2 of the lesser common species of fish making it all the more rare! It is remarkable that such a dynamic ecological event was frozen in time for us to see here.
 
The larger fish is known as a Diplomystus. These fish have an upturned mouth typical of a surface feeding predator. They are amongst some of the larger fish found in this formation as seen on this specimen which measures 16" long. The bone and scale preservation is amazing to both look at and feel. 
 
The smaller (and somewhat unlucky) fish shown in the mouth is known as a priscacara. It is easily identifiable by its bony dorsal and anal spikes. They have a modern day sunfish-like body and features. Upon close inspection much of the fish can be seen within the mouth of the Diplomystus.
 
Measurements of the plate are 22" wide x 21" tall with the diiplomystus measuring 16" long. It is backed with 3/4 cabinet grade plywood and metal french cleats ready to hang in the home or office.
